At ged2json.com, we take your privacy seriously. Your genealogy data is deeply personal, and we've built our service with privacy as the foundation—not an afterthought.
Data We Collect
Uploaded Files
- GEDCOM and JSON files you upload are processed in temporary memory
- Files are automatically deleted within 5 minutes of upload
- We do not store, backup, or retain your genealogy data
- We do not analyze the contents of your family trees
Technical Information
For security and rate limiting purposes, we collect:
- IP address (for rate limiting, deleted after 30 days)
- User agent (browser information)
- Conversion type (GEDCOM→JSON or JSON→GEDCOM)
- File size (not contents)
- Timestamp of conversion
Email Address (Optional)
If you choose to provide your email to unlock family insights:
- We store only your email address
- We send a maximum of 2 emails per year
- You can unsubscribe at any time
- We never share your email with third parties
How We Use Your Data
- File conversion: To provide the GEDCOM ↔ JSON conversion service
- Rate limiting: To prevent abuse and ensure fair usage
- Analytics: Aggregate statistics only (e.g., "X trees converted this week")
- Communication: If you provided email, occasional product updates
Data Security
- All data transfers are encrypted using HTTPS/TLS
- Files are processed in isolated, temporary storage
- No permanent storage of genealogy data
- Regular security audits and updates
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Vercel: Hosting and serverless functions
- Turso: Database for emails and usage statistics (not genealogy data)
We do not use any third-party analytics or advertising services that track you.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Delete your uploaded files immediately using the "Delete Now" button
- Request deletion of your email from our mailing list
- Request information about what data we hold about you
API Users
If you use our API, we log API requests for rate limiting and abuse prevention. API keys are stored as secure hashes—we cannot see your actual key.
Children's Privacy
Our service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of any material changes by posting the new policy on this page.
